An Indian’s dilemma
As the issue of Racism on Big Brother becomes household gossip, India creates news in every medium and Shilpa Shetty had her 5 days of fame.
As i argue this issue with my friends a very interesting topic surfaces and then everyone here (UK) wonders about the India they see through the media lenses.
My friends are spellbound by a presenation about the type of pictures we show in Indian newspapers and here you can’t see a drop of blood in the news pages.
As the topic heats up I as a proud Indian proclaim there is nothing around that you wouldn’t find in India.
Well my friends name a few things and they are all in India, right from snow clad mountains to deserts, draughts to tsunami and every religion to every kind of diverse culture and food.
So what doesn’t India have? Well India is Jack of all and master of none. The situation is a bit tricky with media portrayal of the country with rich culture.
I couldn’t believe my ears when i heard how people perceived my country and the impressions they had about it.
Imagine, you as an Indian are asked if you carry pots of water on your head everyday? I don’t deny that people in our villages still do that but not everyone in India does it.
But let me tell you of an incidence that a friend told me and that answered my question about why the world perceives India the way it does.
There is someone who explained to a European girl about India being governed by caste system and there being different classes and lowly professions.
And then the girl added that she was from a high class but now she mingled with friends who were also from low caste cause she was progressive.
When the European girl asked my friend if this was true none of us could control our laughter.
We couldn’t imagine someone painting such a picture of India and we call ourselves the ambassadors of a such a progressive country.
Though we explained to the girl otherwise and told her about India, I couldnt help thinking about the impression such things create in minds of people.
Guess India will always be a country that practices caste because of such people who want to say “I am upper class.”
Lovelyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy……….
I am proud of you girl,
3 Cheers for us proud Indians….who dont have a desire to boast our class but rather the fact that we are Indians…
Unite India, High time!!!

This impression of India has arisen possibly because of the Indians penchancy to berate himself before a foreigner. I mean how many Americans would come toIndia and talk about the muggings and crime rate in New York City. However we Indians when we go abroad find immense pleasure in pointing out India’s shortcomings. I mean doesnt New york have underworld, doesnt it have its own zone for the poor class ?
I think we ourselves are to blame for the picture presented to the world

Well written, so unexpected from you but im glad im proven wrong. Keep up the good work.
Remember you are an ambassador for your country, take it as your responsiblity to educate your friends in UK about our great culture, our traditions, how we as a civilisation are 5000 years old and even more, how we are progessing at an astonishing rate that dosent suprise the world anymore because its almost taken for granted we will.
Jai Hind!!!

Nice one… I think there are some other reasons why most of the people think about India in this way. Firstly we are a very young nation.. just 60 years old.. so we will take time to arrive at world stage. We have started our reforms just 15 years back, so it is going to take some time.
Other thing about India is, if we have something that is really great n out of the world, we will have the exact opposite of it sitting right next to it. And human mind always tend to focus on the negatives of the others and ignore the positives.
But we have arrived, if not for common man in europe or america, for world leaders certainly.
The second most discussed topic at Davos economic forum was rising of India and China as global super powers, the first one was climate affecting businesses.
India poised to make its move… lets hope it will make it fast

A well written thought. But this is a problem, what are we doing about it??? Let’s get together and change image of this wonderful country. Why do people feel shy when ssaying they are Proud Indians. Let’s change this perception.

India for a long time has been a land of snake and snake charmers, but now it is more of a land of entrepreneurs who are taking on the world by storm. It has entrepreneurs who are taking on some of the biggest industries, making a mark in everyfield all around the globe.
This is what we need to project to the world. For a long time we have projected our country differently, but it is only us who have to make a difference in there minds. Now is the TIME.
Good Luck, keep going
